This month's topic: CELEBRATING OUR HUMAN RIGHTS

Human Rights are under violent assault throughout the world. There are more autocracies (91) than democracies (88) worldwide. And 52 nations are currently suffering further backsliding of their democratic institutions, including China, Afghanistan, Congo, Cuba, North Korea, Russia, Rwanda, Sudan, and Turkey.

The rallying cry for those resisting such tyrannies is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, spear-headed by Eleanor Roosevelt in the aftermath of WWII, and now the most widely translated document in the world. It provides essential support for people who are struggling for freedom. There is no better place to start in re-dedicating ourselves to this cause.

Most people can’t name more than a handful of the basic human rights we all share. Yet these rights support our safety, our security and our very lives. Moreover, they inspire the most important humanitarian endeavors throughout the world.

Please join the conversation with one or two of the Rights which especially concern you -- as well as any reservations you have about this approach to humanitarianism. The more we know about our Rights, the better we can protect and benefit from them, for ourselves and our fellow humans throughout the world.

For a review of the 30 Universal Human Rights, data on the degree to which they are violated, and the most notable actions we can take to foster greater respect for them, take 15 minutes to review this site: http://www.humanrights.com
