About the film:
The Pawnbroker is a 1964 American drama film directed by Sidney Lumet starring Rod Steiger, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Brock Peters, Jamie Sanchez and Morgan Freeman in his feature film debut.
In his mesmerizing Academy Award-nominated performance, Rod Steiger plays Sol Nazerman, a Jewish pawnbroker living in Harlem after World War II. A Holocaust survivor, Sol is haunted by his memories of the war and the death of his family. Although he is embittered, and numb to the world around him, including his desperate clientele and the scrum of humanity at his doorstep, Sol's carefully constructed walls begin to crumble as his trauma overwhelms him.
